Doniphan Senior Center Walk-a-thon
April 17, 2020
8:30 - 11:30 am
Doniphan Senior Center is hosting its 19th annual walk-a-thon to benefit the homebound seniors of Ripley County. The walk will be held from 8:30 - 11:30a.m. at the Doniphan River Front Park if weather permits, otherwise it will occur at the Armory. Adequate nutrition is necessary for health, functionality and the ability to remain independent. Healthy eating can increase mental acuity, resistance to illness and disease, energy levels, immune system strength, recuperation speed and the ability to manage chronic health problems. Meals on Wheels ensures that seniors have access to adequate nutrition even when family support, mobility and resources are lacking. For many, the trusted Meals on Wheels volunteer or staff member, who shows up every day with a meal and a smile, is the only person they see or speak with all day. This special delivery is the reason to get up in the morning, something to look forward to, and a reminder to take good care of themselves. Seniors able to travel to congregate meal sites also receive valuable social interaction and companionship. We can all attest that a meal can be more than the food on the plate, but also the company across the table. Along with the inevitable impacts of aging come the increased risks of medical emergencies, falls and other accidents. The safety check that accompanies each meal delivery ensures that, in the case of an emergency or problem, medics will be called, families will be notified, and our seniors will not be forgotten. The Senior Center purchases its own groceries, cooks all meals, and pays its own bills. At times this has been a struggle but the community has always been very supportive to our cause and we thank you for that. As time passes, our elderly populations are growing and the need to help them stay independent as long as possible is very important. Prizes will be awarded for the walkers bringing the most contributions and for finishing with the most laps. To walk and receive a t-shirt, all walk-a-thon participants must submit a minimum of $25.00 by March 31st, along with your t-shirt size. If you would like information, please call 996-3070 between 7:00a.m. – 2:00p.m. Monday -Friday. Thank you!
